Climb on, Sister!

Since I was a small child, every summer and winter mum would take me to the Polish Tatra Mountains. We’d ski the slopes and walk the trails, with the odd bit of via ferrata thrown in, and I’d always scan the granite walls in search for red dots: climbers’ helmets visible from afar. On a lucky day I’d catch a glimpse of a rope’s end sticking out of a tightly packed bag, as a climber was leaving a shelter early in the morning. The ethics prevalent among Polish climbers meant they wouldn’t consciously display gear and everything else that could reveal they were more than just walking would be concealed at all cost. They seemed to be members of a secret club – a club that I really wanted to join.
